Frequently Asked Questions - the FAQs
What documents do I need to begin Mailbox Rentals?
Whether you're signing up for a virtual or physical private mailbox, you need to provide Three (3) documents:
- A completed and notarized USPS form 1583
- A photo ID
- An Address ID
The original completed and notarized USPS 1583 will be kept by the Mailbox provider, while copies of your Photo ID and Address ID will be made so the originals remain with you.
Why do I need to complete USPS form 1583?
The form is a federal requirement of USPS. As the government postal service agency, USPS requires you to complete an authorization form that grants us permission to act as your postal agent, receiving mail on your behalf. Without a completed and notarized form, the accompanying documentation and current information, Mailbox Express is not authorized to receive mail on your behalf. That means we cannot rent you a mailbox.
What forms of ID can I use?
USPS has strict requirements about the forms they will accept. Additionally, a renter cannot use the same document for both types of ID. (for Example, while your StateID is listed under both ID Types, it cannot be used for both as a second document must be produced and copied.

Is my information shared with anyone?
Mailbox Express views your information as critically confidential.
This means that only the USPS will receive a copy of the submitted authorization and identification. We will not share or sell your information with any other party. The only exception to this rule is that law enforcement agencies may produce a subpoena, as part of an investigation, requiring us to provide records of a specific renter, including: the form 1583, copies of your ID, and your package receipt and pick-up logs.
What happens when my information changes?
We (both you and Mailbox Express) are required by the USPS to maintain current records. This means that if your records have expired, or if you change address or contact information, you are required to notify us to update our records.
To update records, you have two options:
- You can visit in-person, or
- Submit updated records and information via service ticket or email us at support@mbexp.com.
Failing to update your records on time will lead to mutually undesirable cancellation of rental.
